Ministry of Planning, EU and Expertise France Discuss Green Economy and Data Management

In the presence of Mr. Nouri Al-Shater and Mr. Muhammad Bin Sharia, Undersecretaries of the Ministry of Planning, and Mr. Muhammad Abudina, Director of the International Cooperation Office at the Ministry of Planning, a meeting was held on Monday, 11/09/2023, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Planning in Tripoli, bringing together the Ministry of Planning, the European Union Delegation to Libya, and Expertise France to discuss the priorities of the Ministry of Planning in the field of policies and capacity building related to the green economy and data management, which comes in harmony with the current priorities of the European Union Delegation to Libya.

Among those attending the meeting were Mr. Mohammed Al-Amin from the International Cooperation Office at the Ministry of Planning, Mr. Nabil Al-Qanqa, Director-Bureau of Statistics and Census, Mr. Mohammed Qurain, Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, and Mr. Khaled bin Othman, Chairman of the Libyan Oil and Gas Council.

On the part of the European Union delegation to Libya, the meeting was attended by Mr. Horia Nagacevschi, Head of the Political Department and Chargé d’Affaires of the Mission, along with Mr. Marton Benedek, Head of Cooperation, Ms. Francesca Cuccia, Project Manager for Private Sector Development Programmes, and Ms. Liliane Anjo, the Mission’s Political Advisor.

From Expertise France, Mr. Julien Schmitt, Country Representative and Programs Director, and his deputy, Mr. Mohamed Al-Aswad, participated in the meeting with Ms. Yosra Bennaji, Chief of the Economic Diversification Component of the E-nable project funded by the European Union, and Ms. Sarah Belamin, Communications Officer.

The attendees stressed the need for concerted efforts for sustainable economic development in Libya by focusing on renewable energy, water, and waste management. The meeting addressed the critical role that data availability plays in making sound decisions that contribute to the diversification of the Libyan economy.

Mr. Nouri Al-Shater, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Planning for Sustainable Development Affairs, confirmed that the Ministry of Planning is fully prepared to cooperate with the European Union and Expertise France to support the green economy and exchange knowledge and skills. He praised international partners’ role in empowering and diversifying the Libyan economy. He expressed the Ministry’s interest in renewable energies and its desire to start designing a business plan and start technical meetings to quickly achieve the desired results.
